Make homemade pumpkin pie spice with four simple spices. Perfect for cookies, baked goods, overnight oats, coffee, and more.

Make your own homemade pumpkin pie spice with just four warming spices: cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves.

I love making my own spice blends at home because they're incredibly simple, and you can adjust the proportions to suit your taste. For this pumpkin pie spice recipe, I use equal parts cinnamon and ginger, with a little nutmeg and clove to round everything out.

The extra ginger gives this blend a little more warmth and spiciness, which I love.

And you don't need to save this blend for pumpkin pie. Sprinkle it into cookies, baked goods, overnight oats, coffee, or warm beverages whenever you want those cozy pumpkin-pie-inspired flavours.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Only 4 simple spices
  • Takes just a few minutes to make
  • Easy to keep in your pantry
  • No added sugar or fillers
  • Easy to customize to your taste
  • Great for both sweet recipes and beverages

What You'll Need

Cinnamon: The main warming spice in this blend, with a naturally sweet and aromatic flavour.

Ginger: I use an equal amount of ginger and cinnamon because I love the extra warmth and spiciness it brings to the blend.

Nutmeg: Adds a warm, slightly nutty flavour that gives pumpkin pie spice its familiar character.

Clove: You only need a small amount because cloves have a strong, warming flavour that can easily overpower the other spices.

Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp cinnamon
  • 3 Tbsp ground ginger
  • 1 Tbsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp ground cloves

How to Make Pumpkin Pie Spice

1. Add the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves to a small bowl or mason jar.

2. Stir until evenly combined.

 3. Transfer to an airtight spice jar and store in a cool, dry place.

How to Use Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice

This spice blend is useful for so much more than pumpkin pie. Try adding it to:

  • Cookies, Muffins, Quick breads, Pancakes, Overnight oats, Oatmeal, Smoothies, Lattes, Chia see pudding, Baked apples, Granola, Cakes and other baked goods!

Start with a small amount and add more to taste. A little pumpkin pie spice can add a lot of warm flavour.

Why I Add Lots of Ginger

Traditional pumpkin pie spice blends can vary in their proportions, so there's plenty of room to make your own version.

I use equal parts cinnamon and ginger because I particularly enjoy the spicy warmth of ginger. It gives this homemade blend a little more character while still keeping the familiar flavours of pumpkin pie.

If you prefer a milder spice blend, you can always reduce the ginger. The beauty of making your own is that you get to make it exactly how you like it.

How to Store Pumpkin Pie Spice

Store your homemade pumpkin pie spice in an airtight container in a cool, dry pantry, away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Like other ground spices, the flavour will gradually become less potent over time. For the best flavour, make a smaller batch that you'll use within a few months rather than making more than you need.

My Favourites From Amazon:

Once you make your own pumpkin pie spice, it's hard to justify buying a premade blend. Four simple spices are all you need, and you can adjust the blend to make it your own.

I especially love this version for its extra ginger. Keep a jar in your spice cupboard and you'll always have a quick way to add those cozy pumpkin-pie flavours to whatever you're making.
